YouTube webinar “How to manage and treat post-exertional malaise (PEM)”

Research from Associate Professor Rob Wüst – who has recently published a study, co-funded by ME Research UK, which identifies that muscle problems in long COVID and ME/CFS cannot be explained by prolonged inactivity – was highlighted (around 28 minutes and 50 seconds into the YouTube video) by Professor David Putrino as some of the most exciting research relating to the pathophysiology of PEM right now in YouTube webinar entitled “How to manage and treat post-exertional malaise (PEM)”

The webinar, hosted by RTHM health – a company launched to ‘address conditions that have long been neglected by the traditional healthcare system’ – explains PEM in Long COVID and ME/CFS, highlighting why symptoms and crashes vary between people.

In the session, the panel discusses possible biological mechanisms, practical management strategies such as pacing and trigger reduction, how to navigate crashes, and emerging areas of treatment and research.

Importantly, speakers in the session consider the different types of PEM, for example Dr. Jennifer Curtin, who is not only Chief Medical Officer and Cofounder of RTHM Health, but also a person with ME/CFS, explains how there are not only physical but also cognitive, sensory, and emotional PEM triggers (21:0023:29). Another key point was the complexity of the relationship between PEM and orthostatic intolerance, and the need to disentangle one from the other in research.
