We are delighted to announce that ME Research UK has awarded funding to Dr Sarah Annesley and Prof. Paul Fisher at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, for their new study looking at mitochondrial dysfunction in ME/CFS.
Since a profound lack of energy is such a common experience of people with ME/CFS, it seems likely that there is something wrong with the complex process of energy storage and productions, and a wealth of research evidence suggests that the mitochondria are dysfunctional in ME/CFS.
The researchers plan to investigate whether their own previous findings of mitochondrial dysfunction can be replicated in other cell types, which might indicate a more widespread problem. They will also look at whether other pathways are involved, and the potential involvement of epigenetics.
