Prof. Rob Wüst speaks to Men’s Health Netherlands

Prof. Rob Wüst has spoken to Men’s Health Netherlands about his research into ME/CFS, including the team’s paper, “Skeletal muscle properties in long COVID and ME/CFS differ from those induced by bed rest”, which acknowledges funding from ME Research UK.

The Men’s Health article, translated from Dutch, opens with the story of sprinter Beth Dobbin, who, five years after competing at the Olympic Games, now spends more than 22 hours a day in bed because of ‘ME’.

Following this, Prof Wüst’s research and expertise are drawn upon to explain that muscle changes, for example, relatively more muscle fibres that fatigue more quickly, have been identified in people with ME/CFS.

The journalist goes on to explain that although it is not yet clear how ME/CFS develops, Prof Wüst’s research shows that the muscle changes observed in those with the disease cannot be explained by long-term inactivity.

The article also ends by highlighting that “even with such a sports past, you can be severely limited by ME/CFS”.
