How to Get Started Fundraising

Ready to make a difference to ME research? Start your fundraiser in a few simple steps.

Every pound you raise helps bring us closer to understanding, treating, and ultimately finding a cure for ME/CFS.

Here is how to get started:

1. Choose your way to fundraise

Start by picking something that you enjoy and suits your interests, skills, and lifestyle. Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

Big or small, it all helps. Your fundraiser can be as creative or as simple as you like — a birthday fundraiser, a sponsored silence, a bake sale, a workplace challenge, a gaming livestream, a quiz night, or anything else that feels fun and doable for you.

2. Set up your fundraising page

JustGiving makes fundraising simple and secure. You can learn more about JustGiving on our “how to organise an event” page.

  • Choose ME Research UK as your charity
  • Add a photo and personal message explaining why you are fundraising
  • Share your page with friends and family
  • JustGiving handles all the donations and sends them directly to us — no cash handling needed!

3. Tell your story

People give to people. Tell your story:

  • Why are you supporting ME Research UK?
  • What does ME mean to you or someone you care about?
  • Be honest and personal — it helps others understand why this cause matters to you and how their support will help.

4. Spread the word – do not be shy

  • Use social media, email, WhatsApp, posters — whatever works for you.
  • Keep reminding people (they often need more than one nudge!) of your fundraising and how they can help and don’t be shy about asking for support.

💡 Tip: Ask your workplace, school, or community to share your fundraiser too!

5. How can ME Research UK help my fundraising?

When you set up a JustGiving page, we are notified automatically. We will then get in touch to say hello and offer you a free fundraising pack. If you would like one, it can include a T-shirt or running vest, our fundraiser’s guide, and materials such as our What is ME? pamphlet.
