Hippocampus enlargement detected in ME/CFS and long COVID patients

ABC News in Australia have recently reported on an ME Research UK-funded study at Griffith University showing enlargement of the hippocampus in people with ME/CFS. The hippocampus is a region of the brain involved in memory and learning, and these abnormalities may therefore contribute to some of the symptoms of the disease including memory and concentration problems.

The report includes contributions from Dr Kiran Thapaliya and Prof. Sonya Marshall-Gradisnik who are involved in the research, as well as an interview with a person with ME/CFS who highlights the many challenges of living with the disease, and her hopes that research like this “will eventually result in better therapies and diagnostic tools for ME/CFS”.

The study is also featured on the website of Griffith University, including a short interview with Prof. Marshall-Gradisnik who is Director of the National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases at Griffith.

You can also read more about the study on our own website.
